                                   AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT WITH THE EXCEPTION

                                   OF BISHOPS, PRIESTS, DEACONS AND RELIGIOUS

 

01        Q        What are the 10 commandments?

             A        01 = I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange gods

                                before me.

                        02 = You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.

                        03 = Remember to keep holy the Lord’s Day.

                        04 = Honor you father and your mother.

                        05 = You shall not kill.

                        06 = You shall not commit adultery.

                        07 = You shall not steal.

                        08 = You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

                        09 = You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.

                        10 = You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

02        Q         What are the 5 precepts of the Church?      

            A         01 = You shall attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation.

                        02 = You shall confess your sins at least once a year.

                        03 = You shall receive the sacrament of the Eucharist at least during

        the Easter season.

                        04 = You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established

                                by the Church.

                        05 = You shall help to provide for the needs of the Church.

03        Q         What are the Holy Days of Obligation?

            A            Solemnity of Mary = The Ascension = All Saints Day =

                        The Assumption, Immaculate Conception and Birth of our Lord

04        Q         What are the three theological virtues?

            A         Faith, Hope and Charity

05        Q         What are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit?

            A         Wisdom, understanding, council, fortitude, knowledge, pity and fear

                        of the Lord

06        Q         What are the marks of the Church?

            A         It is one, holy, catholic and apostolic.

07        Q         What are the twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit?                      

            A         They are charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness,

                        long-suffering, mildness, faith, modesty, continence, and chastity.

08        Q         What are the two great commandments that contain the whole law

                        of God?

            A         The first is thou shall love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart,

                         with thy whole soul, with thy whole mind, and with thy whole

                         strength.

                        The second is thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.

09        Q         How many sacraments are there?  Name them.

            A         There are seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist,

Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony.

10        Q         What are the chief spiritual works of mercy?

            A         To admonish the sinner, To council the doubtful, To instruct the

                         ignorant, To comfort the sorrowful, To bear wrong patiently and

                        To forgive all injuries.

11        Q         Why do we need the sacrament of Reconcillation?

            A         Because the sinners wounds God’s honor and love, his own human

                        dignity and the spiritual well-being of the Church.

12        Q         Why is the Eucharist a sacrament of unity?

            A         Because it is meant to unite the family more closely each day with God

                        and with another.

13        Q         What should the sinner be aware of when seeking forgiveness from

                        God?

            A         The suffering and death on the cross which Christ endured to destroy

                         the effects of sin.

                        The power of grace which is greater than that of sin and the

                        superabundant love of God  which restores the penitent and draws

            him towards salvation.

14        Q         Who were the Holy Innocents?

            A         They were the martyred boys under two years of age, whom King

                        Herod ordered to be massacred.  It was an attempt by Herod to kill

                        the Babe of Bethlehem, who he feared would usurp his kingship.

15        Q         What do we mean by perpetual adoration?

            A         It is prayer before the Blessed Sacrament either reserved in the

                        tabernacle or exposed in a monstrance, continued by successive

                        worshippers day and night without intermission.

16        Q         What are the three titles of the Pope?

            A         He is Pope,“Head of the Universal Church = He is the Bishop,

                        “Of Rome” and He is Head of State, “Vatican City”

17        Q         What are the Synoptic Gospel and why are they called Synoptic?            

                        Matthew = Mark = and Luke

            A         They are so named because they follow the same general plan and

                        reflect great similarity in the events related and even in literary

                        expression.

18        Q         What is Bodily Resurrection?

            A         It is the universal return to life of all human beings, to occur soon

                        before the last judgment by God’s almighty power.  Each individual

                        soul will be reunited with the self same body with which it was united

                        on earth.

19        Q         What three things are necessary to make a sin mortal?

            A         First, the thought, desire, word, action or omission must be seriously

                        wrong.

                        Second, the sinner must be mindful of the serious wrong.

                        Third, the sinner must fully consent to it.

20        Q         Who founded the Church and why?

            A         Jesus Christ founded the Church just before His ascension, when He

                        commissioned the apostles to make disciples of all nations.  He

                        founded the Church in order to bring all people to eternal salvation.

21        Q         What is meant by the authority of the Catholic Church?

            A         That the Pope and the bishops as lawful successor of the apostles,

                        have the power from Christ Himself to teach, to sanctify, and to

                        govern the faithful in spiritual matters.

22        Q         What do we mean by the Church Militant, the Church Suffering and

                         the Church Triumphant?

            A         The Church Militant is the Church on earth, still struggling with sin

                        and temptation, and therefore engaged in warfare with the world,

                        the flesh and the devil.

                        The Church Suffering is the Church of all the faithful departed who

                        are saved but are still being purified in purgatorial sufferings.

                        The Church Triumphant is the Church of those in heavenly glory who

                        have triumphed over their evil inclinations, the seductions of the

                        world, and the temptations of the evil spirit.

23        Q         How should we assist at Mass?

            A         We should assist at Mass with reverence, attention, devotion, uniting

                        with the priest in offering the Holy Sacrifice and receiving

                        Holy Communion.

24        Q         Why do we pray?

            A         We pray to adore God, expressing to Him our love and loyalty.

                        To thank him for His favors.

                        To obtain from him the pardon of our sins and the remission of their

                        punishment, and to ask for graces and blessings for ourselves and

                        others.

25        Q         What is due to the real presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament

                        reserved?

            A         Gratitude, adoration and devotion are due to the real presence of

                        Christ in the Blessed Sacrament reserved.  It is a powerful help to

                        prayer and service of ourselves and others.

26        Q         What is a Pieta?

            A         A general term applied to representation of the dead Christ in art.

27        Q         What is Homiletics?

            A         It is the branch of theological studies that treats of the composition

                        and delivery of sermons, homilies and other religious discourses

                        and instruction to the faithful.  It is required of all those who have

                        prepared for the priesthood and the permanent diaconate.

28        Q         What is the forgotten sin?

            A         Those grave sins which a person would have confessed in the

                        sacrament of penance but sincerely forgot.   They are forgiven

                        with whatever sins are confessed, with the provision that, should

                        they later be remembered, they are then mentioned in a later

                        confession as having been inadvertently forgotten.`

29        Q         What is a Cathedral?

            A         The official church of a bishop, where his permanent Episcopal

                        throne is erected.  It is the mother church of a diocese and its

                        clergy have precedence.

                        The cathedral must be consecrated, and the date of consecration

                        and the date of its titular feast must be observed.

30        Q         What is Positive Theology?

            A         It is that part of theology which seeks to establish the truth of the

                        Church’s teaching from the evidence of Scripture, tradition, and the

                        analogy of faith, for example, consistency with the whole body of

                        Catholic doctrine.

31        Q         What are the corporal works of mercy?

            A         To feed the hungry = to give drink to the thirsty = to clothe the naked =

                        to shelter the homeless = to visit the sick = to visit those in prison =

                        to bury the dead.

32        Q         What do we mean by the Virgin Birth?

            A         It is a popular expression for Christ’s conception and birth of

                        a unique mother, Mary.  Taught by all the creeds of Christendom,

                        it is an article of faith and a basic norm of Christian orthodoxy.

33        Q         What is a vow of Chastity?

            A         The vow by which a person freely gives up the right to marriage, and

                         adds the obligation of the virtue of religion to the duty of abstaining

                         from all voluntary indulgence of sexual pleasure.  

34        Q         Why does the priest wash the feet of people on Holy Thursday?

            A         Because it was an action of Christ at the Last Supper when he washed

                        the feet of the his disciples to teach them humility as a condition for

                        the practice of charity.

35        Q         What is a Tiara?

            A         A Tiara is the papal crown, which is a tall headdress of gold cloth

                        ornamented with precious stones, encircled with three coronets and

                        surmounted by a cross.  The first circlet symbolizes the Pope’s

                        universal episcopate; the second, his primacy of jurisdiction; and

                        the third, is temporal influence.

36        Q         What is a Sacristy?   

            A         It is a room attached to a church, usually near the altar, where the

                        clergy vest for ecclesiastical functions.  The sacristy affords storage

                        for sacred vessels, vestments, and other articles needed for

                        liturgical use.

37        Q         What is the Rite of Peace?

            A         it is the sign of peace offered at Mass.  After the priest has prayed

                        for peace and unity in the Church, the people are asked to express

                        their love for one  another before they share the Eucharist.

38        Q         What is Moral Order?

            A         It is the proper direction of human actions to a person’s ultimate end,

                        namely the eternal destiny. 

39        Q         What is Morality in Media?

            A         It is the concern of dedicated citizens organized in certain countries

                        like the United States to prevent by legal means the use of the media

                        from morally perverting the press, movie, radio and television

                        audience.

40        Q         What does the word Morality means?

            A         It means the relation between a human act and the final destiny of a

                        human being.  It is the norm of behavior that flows from each

                        person’s ultimate end, which is the possession of God in the beatific

                        vision.

41        Q         What are the chief effects of Sanctifying Grace?

            A         The chief effects are:  It makes us holy and pleasing to God.

                        It makes us adopted children of God.  It makes us temples of the

                        Holy Spirit and it gives us the right heaven.

42        Q         Why do we address God as “Our Father who art in heaven”?

            A         Because we belong to Him, our loving Father, who created us and

                        watches over us, who adopts us through sanctifying grace as His

                        children, and who destines us to live forever with Him in heaven,

                        our true home.

43        Q         What does the community of faith owes the Pope and bishops?

            A         The community of faith owes the Pope and bishops respect and

                        obedience, for in exercising his office of father and pastor, a  bishop

                        should stand as one who serves.

44        Q         What does the word “Transubstantiation” mean?

            A         Transubstantiation means that Christ himself, true God and

                        true Man, is really and substantially present, in a mysterious way,

                        under the appearances of bread and wine. 

45        Q         What is the wish of the church concerning devotion to Mary?

            A         She urges that special veneration be given to Mary, due to her as

                        Mother of Christ, Mother of the Church and our spiritual Mother.

                        This veneration is to be taught by word and example.        

46        Q         What are the three types of Baptism?

            A         Baptism of Water – the water used for the administration of

                        the Sacrament of baptism.

                        Baptism of Blood – martyrdom in the case of a person who died

                        for the Christian faith before he or she could receive the sacrament.

                        Baptism of Desire – the equivalent of sacramental baptism of water,

                        which in God’s providence is sufficient to enable a person to obtain

                        the state of grace and to save his or her soul.

47        Q         What is the Roman Ritual?

            A         It is the book containing the prayers and ceremonies to be used by

                        bishops, priests and deacons in the sacred liturgy.

48        Q         Define Beatitudes?

            A         Beatitudes are the promise of happiness made by Christ to faithfully

                        accept his teaching and follow his divine example.

49        Q         How many books are there in the Catholic Bible?   How many in the

                       Old Testament?   How many in the New Testament?

            A        73 books in the Catholic Bible       46 in Old Testament

                       27 in New Testament

50        Q         What are the seven capital Sins?

            A         Pride = avarice = lust = envy = gluttony = anger and sloth.

51        Q         What are the seven Capital Virtues?

            A         Humility = pride = liberality = chastity = meekness = temperance =

                        brotherly love and diligence.

52        Q         What is a Deanery?

            A         It is a subdivision of a diocese, consisting of a number of parishes,

                       over which presides a dean appointed by a bishop.  The duty of the

                       dean is to watch over the clergy of the deanery, to see that they fulfill

                       the orders of the bishop, and observe the liturgical and canon law.

53        Q         Can a marriage be done by proxy?

            A         Yes it is permissible provided that an agent substitute for one of the

                        parties and that agent has authentic written credentials signed by the

                        absentee and the parish priest where the commission was given, or by

                        two reliable witnesses.

54        Q         What is a May Crowing?

            A         It is a solemn procession, during the month of May, at the close of

                         which a statue of the Blessed Virgin is crowned with a garland

                         of roses or other appropriate ornament.

55        Q         What is Religious Indifference?

            A         Is an attitude that all religion are equally good and equally capable of

                        leading a person to his or her eternal destiny.  In its most extreme

                        form the theory that there is no one form of religious belief, divine

                        worship, or moral behavior that has been revealed by God.

56        Q         Who is the patroness of the United States?

                        Who is patron of the Universal Church?

            A         Mary, the Immaculate Conception is patroness of the United States

                        Saint Joseph is the patron saint of the Universal Church

57.       Q         What is the Power of Jurisdiction?

            A         It is the moral right to govern the faithful in the Catholic Church.

                        Also called the power of ruling, which, by divine institution, belongs

                        to the Church founded by Christ.  It includes jurisdiction in the

                        external forum (publicly known) and the internal forum (private

                        matters of conscience), whether sacramental or non-sacramental.

58.       Q         What is Internal Grace?

            A         It is the supernatural life, infused virtues and divine inspirations that

                        directly affect the human soul and elevate its being and activities to a

                        share in the life of God.   It is called internal to be distinguished from

                        external grace that is not inherently supernatural.

59.       Q         What does General Examen mean?

            A         It is a prayerful daily periodic examination of one’s conscience to

                        determine what faults have been committed,  which call for

                        repentance and what good actions were performed, for which God

                        should be thanked.

60        Q         What does the word Ex Cathedra mean?

            A         It is a term commonly applied to the special and explicit exercise of

                        papal infallibility.  When the Pope speaks from the chair (cathedra)

                       of authority, as visible head of all Christians, his teaching is not

                       dependant on the consent of the Church and is irreformable.
