The
Squires from around the state have been very active since the end of
February with 4 State events in the last 8 weeks. On February 201 the
State Circle along with Marion Circle 786 sponsored the 1 ' Annual Golf
Tournament for the boys, for the first event it was well attended and a
good time was held by all.
On
March 4'" New Iberia Circle 2089 sponsored the State Horseshoe
tournament with the following results: In the Senior Division St Eloi
Circle 3618 swept the division of all three positions; the Jr. Division
was won by Jude Savoie of Erath Circle 1685 with squires from the host
circle claiming the 2^d and 31 positions. In doubles the host circle
claimed 11 and 31 with St Eloi claiming 2"°. Sportsmanship Trophies
for Sr division were awarded to St Eloi while the Jr. Sportsmanship went
to Erath Circle 1685. Thanks to New Iberia Circle 2089 for a well
organized event.
March
18`" saw the young men at a one day Retreat sponsored by Jesuit
Circle 4156. A day of reflecting on the different aspects of the Catholic
religion was a welcome break from the rigors of the sports competition of
the preceding events. Thanks to Father Boudreaux and Jesuit Circle for
hosting this event. The State Family would like to take this opportunity
to thank Mr. David Bakelor and the rest of the elected State Officers for
supporting the Squires with the State Retreats and all the help that is
given to us during these two special events.
Finally
on April 11 and 2"d the Squires State Convention was held in Hammond
and hosted by Hammond Circle 585. Father Scott leading a rosary for all
attendees and parents opened the convention. We were then welcomed by the
mayor of Hammond who welcomed everyone to the city and wished everyone
well. Following this was an inspirational talk from the local Father Prior
about the effects of drinking and driving using his own personal
experience. Following the nomination of officers and lunch the elections
were held with the following young men being elected for the 2000-2001
fraternal year: State Chief Squire - Eric Bergman Circle 786 Gretna, State
Deputy Chief Squire Kilman Landry Circle 2089 New Iberia, Sate Notary -
Jeremy Bridgewater Circle 786 Gretna, State Bursar - Jude Savoie Erath

EmoryBeard St Basil Circle, State Pole Captain - Mark Schexnayder St Basil
Circle. Congratulations to all those elected and those who were nominated
to run.
The
awards banquet and installation was well attended by parents and
supporters of the Squires, State Treasurer Steve Thomas officiated the
installation of the new officers. The following awards were given out:
